Turn the news off

Tim Sanders, author of Saving The World at Work, recently wrote a post about tying to keep your mind off the news.  This article came out at the perfect time, right when people are sitting around talking about wall street and the economy.

Good read for anybody in the architecture and engineering industry.  Concentrate on new projects, trying to service your current clients, or gather your architects and engineers and talk about the good going on.

Going to Vegas Tomorrow

Heading out to Las Vegas tomorrow for the DDi Leadership Forum.  I will be presenting as the keynote, on Recruiting and Retaining the Next Generation.

Here is a brief description of my talk:  Generations X & Y will continue to challenge us as firm owners and managers; they will test the waters, and will sometimes go overboard. Justin G. Roy will share some approaches other firms are using, in addition to sharing some tips and strategies for recruiting and retaining the next generation.

After the talk, and answering questions, I think I might take a walk down the strip or possibly play some blackjack, but I’ll have to leave the title to my house at home.

Body Language at an Interview

October 9, 2008 Leave a comment

It cane make or break the interview. It can get you the job or cause you to lose a great opportunity. Handle your body language correctly, and you’ll make a good impression. Give off the wrong body language, and you might scare off a potential employer.

As an executive recruiter for the consulting engineering industry, I talk to a lot of candidates for a variety of engineering clients. Most of my conversations, however, occur over the phone. While I have developed a pretty keen knack for reading people over the phone, there’s obviously not much I can do in the way of reading body language. So it’s tough to give specific advice to candidates before they interview. And it’s tough to know how a candidate will conduct him- or herself in terms of body language during an interview with a client.

I came across a article that examines the importance of body language during an interview. It offers some dos and don’ts that may be helpful. Take a look here. And remember, don’t stare blankly as you slouch in your seat. Sit upright and keep an expression of interest on your face at all times.

Pulver talks about a seven-step approach to this.  Here are the steps, but make sure you visit the post to read his explanation of each step:

  3. Now Identify 30 “Super” connectors in your area of Interest
